  Programs that provide intensive rehabilitative services on a 24-hour basis for patients who are severely disabled as a result of injury or disease. Services include a thorough evaluation of the person's abilities and disabilities and the development and implementation of a rehabilitation plan which may incorporate physical, occupational, speech and/or other types of therapies; education about modifications in lifestyle which may be necessary including information about diet, exercise and stress reduction; guidance in using adaptive devices which maximize the person's functional abilities; and counseling for the person and/or significant others to facilitate a positive adjustment to the person's current condition. Inpatient rehabilitation services may be provided by general acute care hospitals or skilled nursing facilities.

  A system of cemeteries, soldiers' lots and monument sites administered by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in which members of the armed forces, veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, and designated family members can be interred. Also eligible for burial are members of the reserve components of the armed forces, the Army and Air National Guard, and Reserve Officers Training Corps who die while on active duty or training for performing these services, or who have 20 years of service in the reserve components of the armed forces creditable for retired pay.   Programs that provide extended shelter and supportive services for homeless individuals and/or families with the goal of helping them live independently and transition into permanent housing. Some programs require that the individual/family be transitioning from a short-term emergency shelter. The length of stay varies considerably by program. It is generally longer than two weeks but typically 60 days or more and, in many cases, up to two years or more. The supportive services may be provided directly by the organization managing the housing or may be coordinated by them and provided by other public or private agencies. Transitional housing/shelter is generally provided in apartment style facilities with a higher degree of privacy than short-term homeless shelters; may be provided at no cost to the resident; and may be configured for specialized groups within the homeless population such as people with substance abuse problems, homeless mentally ill, homeless domestic violence victims, veterans or homeless people with AIDS/HIV. Included are post-domestic violence shelter housing programs that make affordable rental housing (or other accommodations) available to women, generally those who are coming directly out of a domestic violence shelter or other crisis shelter, often in apartment complexes owned by the shelter.

Claimants must show that they require the "aid and attendance" of another person in order to perform at least two activities of daily living (e.g., grooming, transferring, eating, bathing, dressing or toileting); that they are blind or nearly blind; or that they are a patient in a nursing facility. The A&A Pension can be used for any type of chronic care provider including paid in-home caregivers, adult day care, adult residential care homes, assisted living facilities or skilled nursing facilities. The individual must meet financial eligibility criteria, and a report from an attending physician or other medical evidence validating the need for care is required.
