Providence Journal - 12/14/2017
Dec. 14--SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- An 8-year-old composer and piano prodigy will give a solo concert Dec. 21 at the Brookdale South Bay Nursing Home.
Ian Lin will play classic Christmas pieces on the piano, including "O Holy Night," "Ave Maria," music from the "Nutcracker" ballet and one of his own compositions.
The concert, free and open to the public, is from 11 a.m. to noon at the nursing home at 1959 Kingstown Rd. (Route 108), South Kingstown.
Lin, the son of Christine Liu and Bing-Xuan Lin, is homeschooled but studies composition and piano in Boston and last spring took a senior composition course at the University of Rhode Island.
He will represent Massachusetts in the eastern division of the Music Teachers National Association composition competition, which he won last year and advanced to the national finals, where he placed third.
In June, when he was still 7, he placed third in the Massachusetts Steinway Piano Competition, against children 9 and 10 years old.
