The Franklin Speaking Language Master Special Edition, model LM-6000SEV, is a hand-held augmentative communication and learning device and voice output dictionary designed for use by persons who are blind or have low vision, or individuals with speech or learning disabilities. This unit combines a spelling corrector, dictionary, thesaurus, grammar guide, and 10 educational games. The Language Master 6000SE features a typewriter-style keyboard with high-contrast lettering and raised locator dots and function keys for most tasks, a large screen. The purchase price includes headphones, press-on locator dots, a carrying case, an instruction tape, a print manual, and a quick-reference card. AUGMENTATIVE SPEECH FEATURES: 26 text-to-speech messages for pronunciation stored in message list; a word list with more than 50 words for study and game practice; alphabetical message indexing; 2 speech keys to read screens or say single words; REV and FWD keys for scrolling through references; and the ability to toggle full menus and help messages. BLIND ACCESS FEATURES: Fully speaking reference screens, word and message lists, menus, help messages, prompts, and games; three ways to hear spellings; an ID key that enables keys to speak their names without executing their functions for keyboard exploration; a WHERE key that describes the current screen; FAST/SLOW speech speeds; screen ending tonal cue; function keys differentiated from letter keys by location, size, and shape; default keyboard echo; key click mode; a recessed ON/OFF key; tactile markings on battery cover; press-on locator dots; instruction tape. LOW VISION FEATURES: Screen characters can be set to all caps and large type (0.25 inches); white keys on dark blue background; black lettering on white background display; 0.25 bold capital letter keyboard lettering is; high contrast screen glass; fully adjustable screen contrast. SPECIAL LEARNING FEATURES: 5 dedicated function keys are DICT (dictionary definitions), THES (synonyms and antonyms), CLASS ("Classmates" such as "iron" and "zinc"), GRAM (for grammar topics), CONF (confusable words such as "rain" and "reign"); automatic spelling correction; built-in grammar guide covering 70 topics; 9 word games; elementary, intermediate, advanced, expert, SAT, and user's word lists.
