Driver wanted in East Hartford crash that killed 2 people standing near disabled car, police say

Journal Inquirer - 6/7/2024

Jun. 7—EAST HARTFORD — A driver ran away from the scene after killing two people who were standing near a disabled vehicle on Route 5/15 early Thursday, state police said.

Connecticut State Police identified the two people killed as Hartford residents Moncrieffe Marlon, 18, and Jaheem Emmanuel Miles, 21.

Miles was a passenger in the disabled vehicle, according to a summary of the crash released Friday. It was not clear why Marlon was on foot along the highway. The summary listed Marlon as a "pedestrian."

The crash was reported around 1:15 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of the highway near the on-ramp from Interstate 84 westbound, according to state police.

The agency said a 2004 Honda Accord had become disabled in the right lane of the two-lane highway. The three occupants were out of the car and in the right shoulder, the report said. But for an "unknown reason" one of the occupants, Miles, and a pedestrian, Marlon, "gathered" near the Honda in the right shoulder, state police said.

A Nissan Rogue struck Marlon and then hit the Honda Accord, state police said. The collision caused the Honda to collide with Miles, according to state police.

Both cars came to rest in the right lane.

Marlon was pronounced deceased at the scene, the report said.

Miles sustained "life threatening" injuries and was taken to Hartford Hospital, where he was also pronounced dead, state police said.

The agency said the other two occupants of the Honda sustained minor injuries "from a previous collision" and were taken to Saint Francis Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Nissan Rogue involved in the crash ran away from the scene, state police said.

State police said the incident remains under investigation.
