Get moving to support Vernon youth

A milestone of moving will be celebrated in Vernon Sunday, May 5.

The 25th annual Independent Living Vernon's (ILV) Moving For Independence will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The People Place, 3402-27th Ave.

Cycle, walk, scooter - pick your mode of transportation then enjoy a massage, lunch and a gift bag of donations from local sponsors.

"ILV has a strong connection to people with a variety of disabilities and their families in the community and the surrounding area," said ILV. "We have been supporting individuals with a variety of disabilities."

For the $25 entry fee, you support youth with various disabilities. If you collect $100 in pledges, the entry fee will be waived.

Kids 12 and under can take part for free.

First, choose your mode of transportation (walk, cycle scooter, etc.), then choose your route – 24 kilometres (cycle, 9:30 a.m. start out to the Okanagan Rail Trail to Kekuli Bay, then return), 45km (cycle, 8:30 a.m. start, down the rail trail to Oyama and back), or 11km (walk, cycle, scooter to Lakeshore Road in Okanagan Landing and return, 10 a.m. start.).

You go at your own pace and as far as you wish. Then return to The People Place food and relaxation. Participants can also enjoy some draw prizes from various sponsors.

ILV says through research it is estimated that 25 per cent or more of those living in the Okanagan have a disability of some sort.

For 19 years ILV has been supporting youth with disabilities to gain independent living skills with its peer support group called Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.).

All monies raised from this event will go directly to Y.O.U.
