Witnesses describe chaos at York nursing home after intruder entered ‘acting crazy’

Patriot-News - 5/2/2024

Residents and staff members described a chaotic scene at a nursing home in York Thursday afternoon when a man entered the facility and began chasing people through the halls.

Bea Jackson, an employee in the laundry at Rest Haven York nursing home, said she was coming out of the bathroom when she heard a commotion shortly before 1 p.m.

“The guy was chasing everybody, scaring residents,” said Jackson. “I was just running for cover.”

Jackson said one resident was knocked down as staff tried to get residents to safety.

“[The intruder] was acting crazy, scary, violent, threatening everybody,” she said.

A call to police dispatch at 12:49 p.m. said there was a man in the lobby wearing a hospital bracelet, who said someone was chasing him. Spring Garden Township police shot the man inside the nursing home at about 1:12 p.m. He was later pronounced dead, according to the York County coroner.

David Sackalowski, 72, a resident of the nursing home since January, said he saw the man after he entered and described him as “someone who didn’t belong there.”

He said he heard shots fired. When asked if he was afraid, Sackalowski said, “it don’t bother me.”

David Sunday, the York County district attorney addressing the media at the scene, said no residents or staff were hurt in the incident.
