LETTER TO THE EDITOR: People who need accessible parking suffer most from misuse of disability spaces

Nanaimo News Bulletin - 9/25/2022

To the editor,

Re: Disability spaces should go to those who require them, Letters, Sept. 7.

I agree with the letter writer 100 per cent. There is abuse of these special parking spaces and the ones who suffer the most are the ones who really need them. I know sometimes people get a surgery, or have an event that entitles them to the passes but if this situation rectifies itself, one is no longer qualified to receive the pass.

I have one for my mom, who hasn't been able to walk for years. However, according to the rules, we may only use it when she is with us. The best thing about the special parking spaces is that they enable me to get her in and out of the car and into her wheelchair more readily. And if she's not with me, I park in the regular spaces.

As an aside, we are not supposed to go driving around with them hanging off our rear view mirrors. Read the fine print, folks.

Another abuse of parking places is people taking up the special family parking when the youngest child they have with them is old enough to read the newspaper.

In closing, I don't believe this is a matter for the police. I do, however, believe it's a matter for the parking police.
