Grand Forks Herald - 9/16/2020

Sep. 16--Two downtown Grand Forks bars have agreed to make their buildings accessible for people with disabilities after complaints were filed with the U.S. Attorney's Office under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Investigations were opened into Joe Black'sBar and Grill and The Hub Pub after a patron filed complaints that the establishments didn't have dining spaces or blackjack gaming spaces to accommodate wheelchairs, according to documents. Both bars are operated by Dennis Blackmun and Joe Schneider and are popular downtown establishments in Grand Forks.

As part of the settlement agreements, both establishments will provide accessible dining tables and blackjack gaming spaces.

Joe Black's will add an additional 11 dining spaces and at least one blackjack table space that are wheelchair accessible by Dec. 31. The Hub Pub will add an additional four dining spaces and at least one blackjack table space that are wheelchair accessible by the same date. The Hub Pub also will post a sign on its inaccessible front Third Street entrance directing people to the accessible back entrance.

Both establishments also agreed to ensure future renovations to the buildings are ADA-compliant.

U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley commended Schneider and Blackmun for their cooperation during the investigation.

"The corrective measures agreed to by Joe Black'sBar and Grill and The Hub Pub will give individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to enjoy two prominent downtown Grand Forks restaurants, as is required by the ADA," Wrigley said in a statement.

Terry Van Horn, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said he is not aware of any other ADA complaints or ongoing investigations in Grand Forks.
