The Braillex EL Braille Assistant (ELBA) is a Braille notetaker designed for use by persons who are blind or have low vision. The ELBA features a built-in modem and software providing full Internet and e-mail access. Also included are a word processor, day-planner, scientific calculator, MP3 player, spreadsheet program, database program, and Braille translation program. It uses the Linux operating system. The ELBA has 16 megabytes (MB) of non-volatile flash memory and 32 MB RAM, allowing storage of thousands of documents. Input can be made in either grade 1 or grade 2 Braille. The Braille keyboard is ergonomically designed for comfort during long writing sessions. The Easy Access Bar, a long key on the front of the ELBA, allows the user to scroll up or down quickly while keeping both hands in contact with the Braille display. The ELBA has a RS232 nine-pin serial port and a 25-pin parallel port, and it can function as a Braille terminal or refreshable Braille display for another personal computer. POWER: Uses internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack or alternating current (AC) adapter. OPTIONS: Braille or QWERTY keyboard, 32- or 18-cell Braille display, disk drive and memory storage cards, and LCD visual display. DIMENSIONS (HxLxW): 2 x 8.5 x 11.8 inches. WEIGHT: The 32-cell model weighs 4.5 pounds.
