Superadio III is a subcarrier radio designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This FM radio is modified to receive subsidiary communication service (SCS) programs, including special programming for the blind, broadcast under the Subsidiary Communications Authorization (SCA), a provision of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules that allows FM radio stations to transmit multiple channels of audio using the same frequency. Programs for the blind may include readings of daily newspapers, grocery ads, magazine articles, and news of special interest to blind listeners. Modified radios are available with a built-in SCS adapter fixed to 67 KHz (kilohertz) or 92 KHz, which are typically used in SCS broadcasts, or with an Elf-2A adapter tunable from 57 through 92 KHz. The tunable version includes a light emitting diode (LED) that glows brightly when an SCS program is tuned in. All versions have a switch for selecting FM or SCS.
