AccuVote-TSX is a voice output voting machine system designed for use by voters who are blind or have low vision. This direct record entry (DRE) voting machine system is a voter-activated, interactive touch-screen system with enhanced screen visibility for individuals with low vision and voice output through headphones to ensure voting privacy and independence for individuals who are blind. Using an intelligent Voter Card as the voter interface, this system permits voters to cast their votes either by touching target areas on an electronically generated ballot or by pressing numbers on a telephone-style keypad in response to prompts delivered through the headphones. Mailed absentee ballots can be tallied through optical scan. These units have high resolution screens with a magnification feature that enlarges on-screen text for improved visibility. The system can offer more than eight different languages in one election. Each unit provides a direct-entry computerized voting application that automatically records and stores appropriate ballot information and results. Election results are encrypted for security and stored on several flash memory devices to provide integral system redundancy. The system provides an electronic method to capture the results of provisional or challenged voters until voter verification occurs, eliminating the need for the generation and storage of paper ballots for these voters. At the end of the voting period, the system can print precinct totals to be included as part of the permanent record and send the results to a host computer via a modem. The system prevents over-voting (voting for too many candidates for the same office), and prevents unintentional under-voting by giving voters a list of races and issues for which they have not cast a vote. The system includes intelligent voter cards, touch screen voting machines with headsets and keypads, and Global Election Management System (GEMS) software, an integrated Windows application.
