Exploring Shapes with Playdough is a do-it-yourself general arts and crafts activity designed for children with learning disabilities to learn shapes.

Technical Specifications: 

Step One: Gather materials.

  • Play Dough
  • Plastic shapes (or piece of cardboard, as a substitute)
  • Free Printable Shape Cards
  • Rolling Pin

Step Two: Download the Silly Shapes Matching Cards free printables. Laminate them.

Step Three: Place the free printables face down into a pile.

Step Four: Place plastic shapes into a pile. As a substitute, the teacher cuts out shapes from the piece of cardboard and places them into a pile.

Step Four: The child selects the top card and finds the matching plastic or cardboard shape and places the matching shape on the playdough.

Step Five: The child exercises their fine motor skills, using the rolling pin to press the shapes into the playdough. Finally, the child picks the pressed out shape out of the playdough and places it on the matching card.
