The Solo Wheelchair is a wheelchair prototype that combines the advantages of manual and electrical wheelchairs. With an electrical assist system, Solo increases the range and mobility of a manual wheelchair while providing premium ergonomics and compact foldability. Heavily focused on aesthetics, Solo avoids the medical the user and the gives a feel often associated with electrical wheelchairs. When pushing uphill, Solo assists also assists the user and reduces the resistance. If the user stops, Solo automatically brakes to avoid rolling backwards. When the user goes downhill, Solo recharges its lithium batteries via its KERS (Kinetic energy recovery system) motor. When ready for transport, the Solo wheelchair breaks down for easy transport. The wheels come off and then the seat and back fold together. The seat and back themselves are mesh and based off of ergonomic mesh office chairs.
