The GroovTube is a device designed for people with breathing, speech, or oral motor disabilities for breathing training and oral motor training. It can be used in a therapeutic setting as well as at home. It turns the user's breath into real-time image effects. 

The GroovTube connect to the user's iPad via Bluetooth. To use, the user will inhale or exhale into the mouthpiece of the GroovTube, and airflow is recorded and converted into visual effects in the GroovTube app (downloaded separately). The hardware consists of an input device, an interface, and connection cables.

The idea for the GroovTube started back in 2013.

Ruud van der Wel is werkzaam binnen Rijndam Revalidatiecentrum als ademhalingstherapeut. Hij kreeg het idee om de iPad te gaan gebruiken voor ademhalingstherapeutische oefeningen. Samen met een team van therapeuten is hij in 2013 gestart met het ontwikkelen van de GroovTube en de zogenaamde Breath Controlled Apps (BCA).

Rijndam Revalidatie is specialist in complexe revalidatievraagstukken, volgt ontwikkelingen op de voet, doet onderzoek en is een kweekvijver voor talent. Het geloof dat de balans tussen opleiden, onderzoeken en behandelen tot de beste zorg voor de patiënten leidt sluit naadloos aan bij de doelstellingen van het GroovTube team.

The idea

Ruud van der Wel – Respiratory Therapist – is the creator of the GroovTube. Ruud is working for more than 28 years at Rijndam Rehabilitation. Besides his work as a respiratory therapist, he is the founder of the foundation My Breath My Music. This foundation aims people with severe physical disabilities to have the opportunity to make music, including through self-developed electronic instruments.

Ruud is co-developer of a number of electronic musical instruments, including the Magic Flute, Magic Switch and Adremo Music Switch Set. The instruments are loaned to children throughout the Netherlands. The experience gained with the development of the electronic musical instruments has greatly contributed to developing the GroovTube.

The Foundation has a sister organization in the US since 2014, My Breath My Music USA. This foundation lends out musical instruments for just € 50 per year. For more information read further on www.mybreathmymusic.com.
