---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a standing wheelchair that allows users with lower extremity or mobility disabilities or spinal cord injury to navigate through various environments not designed for use by people who use wheelchairs. The Tek Robotic Mobilisation Device is a powered stand up wheelchair developed by a team of Turkish scientists, led by Necati Hacikadiroglu. The device expands the way wheelchair users can interact with their environment. Wheelchairs generally are limiting by design but the Tek Robotic Mobilisation Device allows users to interact with the environment by sitting, standing, reaching, and adjusting their height to match their environmental situation (i.e. eating lunch at a standing table). According to its designers, the Tek Robotic Mobilisation Device is designed to enable persons who use a wheelchair to move through narrow passages, sit on a chair, use standard restrooms, and provide an opportunity to live or visit places that are not normally designed for people with mobility disabilities. The Tek Robotic Mobilisation Device has already undergone clinical trials, but it is unclear when it will be approved for commercial sale. AUTHOR: Edwin Kee.
