---- CUSTOMIZED ADAPTATION --------- PURPOSE: To create a custom adapted wallet modification for individuals with a variety of physical disabilities including but not limited to: inability to use one hand; sight/depth perception disabilities; limited dexterity; spasms and tremors; or mobility disabilities. The concept was to create a wallet that can be easily manipulated with only one hand, has no small parts, is accessible to an individual sitting who is sitting down, and is designed to be secure with minimal chance of theft. Three designs were created based on the desired features that the users wanted in their wallets. Mock-up wallet designs included accordion-style, magnetic, and strap wallet features. The final design included features from each type of wallet system. Designers located an existing wallet manufactured by WalletBe (Evertek) that could be easily modified to meet all the design requirements at little cost. Magnetic fasteners were added for individuals who had difficulty with manipulating zippers, clasps, and buttons; and the magnets were effective in keeping the wallet’s contents secure. Accordion-style pockets are well spaced and easy to maneuver with large slots that allow users with limited dexterity to easily grab cards, money, or photos. Two other design considerations were a pocket for a cellular phone and an ID window that was easily accessible for individuals who use public transportation. The phone pocket provided a secure but easily accessible place for a cellular phone and the ID window allowed users to provide identification and/or transit pass information while maintaining privacy. The final design feature was a strap that could be placed around the neck or attached to a wheelchair to provide additional security. These wallet modifications provided the users with increased independence to go out into the community and shopping at retail establishments with greater ease and security.
