---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a learning aid to inhibit distractions in the classroom for students with learning or developmental disabilities, including attention deficit disorder, autism and Down syndrome. Aaron Kowald, a University of Canberra student in Australia, created a solution entitled the Study Nook, a miniature desktop divider that stands on a desk and provides privacy on three sides - the front, right and left. The Study Nook is a portable workstation, which opens to provide a child with temporary privacy in the classroom, library or other places where other children are present. The unit is easily collapsible, allowing a child's parent, teacher or caregiver to take it to school, home or elsewhere. Kowald conducted research into the educational habits and environment in which children with disabilities learn and based his design on this data and feedback from educators and users. The Study Nook takes the unique challenges of autism into the design. AUTHOR: Jeff Salton. TITLE: Study Nook gives special needs students added focus. WEBSITE: Gizmag.
