---- CUSTOMIZED ADAPTATION --------- PURPOSE: To create a custom adapted wheelchair terrain sensing control system for individuals with mobility disabilities, spinal cord injury and other people who use wheelchairs. This adaptation was inspired by the needs of disabled veteran's for independence and mobility. By using terrain sensing control systems designed for the guidance of autonomous vehicles on the battlefield, researchers at Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering have begun developing a system that allows wheelchair users to access more areas than ever before. Steep hills or ramps, mud, snow, and uneven ground can be dangerous obstacles for individuals with disabilities. This technology detects such hazardous terrain and automatically adjusts control settings of a powered wheelchair to allow for safer transit without the need for assistance; thus providing themwheelchair users with increased degree of independence which may increase their ability to participate in recreational and functional activities. If the research team can find commercial backing, it is estimated the technology could come to fruition in around five years. AUTHOR: Grant Banks.
