---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a mind-controlled wheelchair using brain computer interface technologies for individuals with mobility and severe disabilities. Researchers at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland have developed a mind-controlled wheelchair which uses an artificial intelligence system called “shared control” making the brain-machine interface more usable. An individual uses his/her thoughts to create specific brain patterns that are recorded by electroencephalography (EEG). The patterns are then interpreted by a computer which transmits a programmed command to the wheelchair. This interface allows the user to pilot the wheelchair without using hand or other physically activated control devices; however, it is still in the rudimentary stages of development. The “shared control” system refers to two small cameras situated on each side of the wheelchair used with image-processing software that help avoid obstacles.
