---- DO IT YOURSELF ENTRY --------- PURPOSE: To create a do-it-yourself portable table for use with an individual with Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy who can no longer lift his arms to feed himself. A small table which folds flat was made from a 1/8 inch masonite. Three panels are all of the same width with one slightly longer than the other two. This creates a top for the table with the two other panels being used to fold out as “leg panels”. Small hinges and screws were obtained from a local hardware store to attach the leg panels to the table top — two small hinges were used per fold out panel. In order to keep the table from spreading out to far, two short lengths of string were attached to the table top — one near each hinged edge of the table top. The far end of each string was attached to the opposite table leg panel to limit how far the panel opens outward. The strings form an “X” pattern underneath the table where they cross as they run to the opposite table panel. The strings are attached by drilling a small hole near the hinge edge of the top panel, threading the string through the bottom of the top table panel, putting a small washer over the string, and then tying a knot in the string on the top side of the table panel. For the side “leg panels”, drill a hole about ¾ of way from the hinged edge to the bottom of panel and similarly anchor the end of the string (making sure to the strings cross under the table). The folded flat table travels easily to restaurants and fits in a suitcase without occupying much space. TITLE: The Portable Table. WEBSITE: Workshop Solutions.
