---- “DO IT YOURSELF” ENTRY --------- PURPOSE: To create a “sleeve” to fit over a child’s wheelchair seatbelt, making the belt safer and harder to undo. First, lay material on flat surface with back side facing up; using straight pins, pin edges together lengthwise along material. Second, using a sewing machine or needle; stitch along line lengthwise. Third, turn material right side out and slip onto one end of wheelchair seatbelt. Fourth, fasten the belt and slide material over fastener; scrunching the material up to make it harder to access the button on the belt. To unfasten the belt, push the material to one side. The soft material protects the user from scratches and discomfort. Using flannel makes the sleeve easily washable. This sleeve is inexpensive to make and the user can have several different colors, to coordinate with his/her clothing. MATERIALS: One piece of soft flannel material 36 inches long and 7 inches wide and thread to match material. TOOLS: Straight pins and a sewing machine or needle.
