---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: A group of seven students from a Wethersfield, CT high school developed the Easy Access Transport System (EATS). The device is designed to solve a problem that a student with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease had accessing his books in his backpack on the back of his wheelchair. Over two months, the EATS was designed to allow the student with CMT to swing his backpack on hinges and bring it around to his lap so he could access his books. The students started with a cardboard prototype, then fine-tuned the design with lightweight wood, and then created a sturdy wood demonstration model. The EATS prototype was entered into the National Engineering Design Challenge competition sponsored by Ability One and the Junior Engineering Technical Society and made it to the finals in Washington, D.C. The EATS prototype was also entered into the international competition sponsored by Invent Your World and won first place in the category, taking home a prize of $1,000.
