U-LAM (Universal Language Activity Monitor) is a data collection program designed for use with users of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices. This personal computer (PC) software facilitates the collection of language samples from older and lower level AAC systems that do not include the LAM feature. It can also be used with AAC systems that include a built-in LAM feature. It records the time and content of language events. Language events can be recorded either through the PC's serial port using a serial cable connected to the AAC device, or through a microphone or magnetic pickup connected to the PC and positioned near the AAC device. The software provides a real-time view of communication, and offers the ability to record one or more partners in a conversation. Notations on non-verbal prompting can be made in the record from the computer keyboard. Audio events are recorded in .wav file format. Files can be saved and a text version can be exported for analysis using the AAC Institute's Performance Report Tool (PeRT), available separately.
