Marine Instrument Talker is a voice output module designed for use in marine applications by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This module adds speech capability to any instrument which has an NMEA 0183 output. It can speak any data item from any NMEA 0183 sentence. Applications include talking depth sounder, talking boat speed indicator, talking compass, talking course-over-ground indicator, or talking wind direction indicator. The module is installed by connecting a speaker, the power source, and the NMEA output from the instrument.
Using the module's "Next Item" key, the module can be set to speak the data whenever it changes, or the user can step through the instrument data using the module's "Next" button until the module speaks the required item. Repeat interval is adjustable, from continuous speech to four minutes delay before saying the data item again. To speed comprehension, the module can be set to speak data in heading format, in three numeral form (e.g., "zero five zero") with no decimal (e.g. "point three five") part. Selections and settings are retained while the module is switched off, so setup need be performed just once. POWER: Uses 12 volts.
