DO IT YOURSELF ENTRY --- PURPOSE: To aid students who are blind or have low vision in learning the four major directions on a map. Create a tactile game board on a raised-line grid sheet with 1-inch squares. On the outer margins of the grid sheet, label the edges: North (upper), South (lower), East (right), and West (left). Mark a "START" square tactilely in the center of the south edge of the board. Affix a pebble or other three-dimensional shape on the square in the center of the north edge of the board to serve as the "goal." Affix smaller three-dimensional items (the number of these can vary) strategically at other intersections around the game board. Up to four players use tactually different movable tokens (e.g., wrapped candy, die, bingo chip, figurine, etc.). Print(in Braille, large print, or both) four cards for each of the following directions: one space North, one space South, one space East, one space West, two spaces North, two spaces South, two spaces East, two spaces West, and Stay. To play, each player draws a card in turn and follows the directions on the card. Players earn 10 points for landing on each of the smaller markers and 50 points for landing on the "goal" in the center of the North edge. The game can end when a player reaches the "goal" or when a player reaches 100 points. If a player is in a position that does not allow movement in the direction indicated, he/she cannot move; however, if the card directs a player to move two spaces in a direction in which only one space is available, the player can move the one space. If all cards are drawn before the game ends, reshuffle the cards. MATERIALS: Raised line grid, pebble, items for tokens, and cards. TITLE: What's Your Move? A Direction Game(in Springboard).
