DO IT YOURSELF PURPOSE: To provide warmth for a powered wheelchair user. A small blower-style heater can be purchased from the the automotive department of local discount or automotive supply stores. The heater is generally used to provide supplemental heat or to defrost windows in cars. The model chosen has a fuse rated at 15 amps to allow it to be run using a 12-volt converter on a powered wheelchair. This heater uses a squirrel-cage blower that draws air in the bottom and expels warmed air out the front. The unit is modified for mounting by adding a metal plate one-half inch from the cold air intake. Holes were drilled to keep the opening clear. Because the unit is very basic and equipped only with a grid, switch, and fan with no thermostat or thermal fuse, care must be taken to regulate the temperature manually. The heater can be transported on a wheelchair lapboard. To prevent the unit from becoming too hot, change the function from heat to fan as needed. POWER: Uses a 12-volt converter to run off the wheelchair battery. TITLE: Wheelchair Heater. MATERIALS: Small supplemental automotive heater, screws, and metal plate. TOOLS: Drill. SKILLS REQUIRED: Power toool use and assembly. REF: The organization can also be reached at Wheelchair Modifications, 5533 A Pony Farm Drive, Richmond, VA 23227.
