---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a dexterity enhancement apparatus for an iPad tablet computer to be used by a child with cerebral palsy (CP). A 5-year-old kindergarten student with CP struggled with the fine motor movement required to use her iPad for communication. The iPad Dexterity Enhancement Apparatus, iDEA, is a supportive, spring loaded tracking system that keeps a user's hand in the optimal operating position while supporting the wrist to prevent hand dragging. This allows the user to utilize a natural tapping motion on the iPad's screen but with enhanced control and guided dexterity. iDEA is comprised of a platform with four springs that is mounted onto a carriage running inside a long rail. The springs allow the users to push the wrist downward, and thereby closer to the work surface, with slight resistance while allowing the user to make natural tapping motions in a more controlled manner. The springs also allow the entire platform to bend in every direction, improving comfort. Once assembled, iDEA can be affixed to any surface using Inventables Suction Cup Tape. The cost for the iDEA, including the framing system, is approximately $170; however, the device alone costs $30. AUTHORS: Ed Gillman, Amy Clancy, Ann Maria Gelle, and Teresa Nguyen.
