---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a tray for a powered wheelchair for individuals with a C6 spinal cord injury (SCI) for use with power wheelchairs. The requirements for the tray are defined to meet the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and through interviews with power wheelchair users. Power wheelchair users with this tray will have the ability to deploy a tray when needed; however, when not in use, the tray can be stored on the wheelchair. The final tray design is customizable, and it is able to be attached to all power wheelchairs manufactured by Permobil and Invacare. Some of the compression clamps found on the tray require more than 5 pounds of force to operate, in violation of ADA guidelines. As a result, the degree of a C6 SCI user's disability determines whether they are able to operate the tray independently. The entire tray assembly is made of aluminum, anodized aluminum, and steel. The aluminum makes up the entire tray aside from the screws, which are made of steel, and the track located underneath the tray surface, which is made of anodized aluminum. The tray assembly weighs 9.25 pounds. The tray requires 11 steps to deploy from the stored position on the side of the wheelchair and 9 steps to retract back to the stored position. The total amount of parts in the assembly is 76. The final cost of the tray is $1335.82. CAPACITY: 5.9. pounds. TITLE: The Tray for a Power Wheelchair.
