---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a Braille smartphone for individuals who are blind or have low vision. 2011 TED Fellow and interaction design graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID) Sumit Dagar is collaborating with the IIT Delhi to create a prototype of the world's first Braille smartphone with a completely tactile display. The phone, which has yet to be officially named, has a tactile screen comprised of a grid of pins that move up and down under a soft membrane to form Braille characters when an SMS message or email is received. The display uses Shape Memory Alloy technology, so as each pin rises, the surface "remembers" its original flat shape and contracts back to that shape when the pin goes down. This technology can also be used to display tactile images and maps. The prototype is being tested at the LV Prasad Eye Institute and the team hopes to release the phone by the end of 2013 for approximately $185. AUTHOR: Eric Larson.
