---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a modular wheelchair that "grows" with the user allowing for independence over the lifespan. Through the United Kingdom's National Health Service, the Renfrew Group developed a new type of powered wheelchair with the Department of Health, as part of the Department's Innovation Health and Wealth program. Renfrew won a government contract to design a chair which maximizes the mobility and independence of children with disabilities as they grow into adulthood. The Chair 4 Life (C4L) design features a new universal modular ISO system that allows third party vendors to provide accessories and equipment that can be swiftly attached to the motorized lifting platform to adapt the wheelchair to the changing needs of the user as he or she matures into adolescence and adulthood. This modular approach enables the seat on a C4L to be replaced periodically as the size and other seating needs of the user change over time. The chair also can be modified to accommodate monitoring and care equipment, extra storage, and other accessories that attach to its mounting system. The C4L's main platform includes a vertical lift to allow the user to rise to eye level with his or her peers, facilitating social and educational development. It also has an adjustable wheelbase to adapt to indoor and outdoor conditions, including small spaces requiring greater maneuverability. The Chair 4 Life has been developed into a working prototype and the Department of Health is now seeking a manufacture as it aim to make C4L available nationally in the UK. AUTHOR: Tom Banks.
