---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of navigation bracelet for individuals who are blind or have low vision to navigate through a train and/or subway system. The Metro Dot is a bracelet that can be a remote fare card for a public transportation system and an navigation aid that provides information in Braille and through vibration for individuals with visual disabilities. To use the Metro Dot, the user speaks their destination into the bracelet, and then holds the bracelet adjacent to a reader for a remote fare card (sometimes called a "smart card") on the entrance gate for the subway station. The Metro Dot is able to identify the station where the user is located by communicating with subway system. It automatically maps the route that user will take, including any stations at which the user will change trains. As the user travels, the Metro Dot relays information such as the subway station and how many more stations to go before the desired stop arrives using a refreshable braille display that uses EAP (Electro Active Polymer) to make a three dimensional pattern with electronic signals. The electronic signals are sent to the surface raising the constant magnet to make a braille pattern on the silicon rubber surface. The bracelet emits vibrations to let the user know when to get off the train. According to the designers, the destination and train travel information is transmitted to the subway through the rail tracks, used as a conductor, sent from the Train Control Computer in between stations. The Metro Dot provides station location information by catching a series of electronic signals that are being sent to the train's receiver antenna. Metro Dot is a 2012 IDEA Award entry.
