--- "DO IT YOURSELF" ENTRY ------- PURPOSE: Pulley device attached to a wheelchair to support the forearm of a person with some shoulder and elbow movement but too much arm weakness to lift the arm unaided, allowing more independent activities. Instructions for building an arm support using an overhead suspension rod and three pulleys, two on the horizontal bar and one on a small piece of rod welded onto the vertical part of the rod. This is clamped onto the back upright of the wheelchair. Rope is threaded through the pulleys with arm supported cuffs attached to the front and counterweights hung behind. This supports the arm and allows vertical and horizontal movement. COMMENTS: Designed and tested at Duke University Medical Center and North Carolina Memorial Hospital. SKILLS REQUIRED: Welding.
