Grant will provide adult day care for disabled

Ottumwa Courier - 11/4/2018

Nov. 04--OTTUMWA -- A $12,500 grant will help Tenco develop a state-certified adult day care program for people with disabilities in Ottumwa, a press release from Tenco Marketing and Development Director Mendy McAdams says.

The Wapello County Foundation in cooperation with the Wapello County Affiliate Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation awarded the grant to assist the opening of the state-certified first adult care program in Ottumwa.

Adult day care programs are designed to meet the needs of adults with disabilities who have difficulty performing daily activities, Tenco said. The programs provide healthcare services and social and recreational activities and provide an alternative to early admission to a nursing home, residential care facilities or intermediate care facilities.

The closest adult day care services are in Centerville and Marshalltown, Tenco said. The Iowa Department of Health says that 31.9 percent of the population of Wapello County is disabled, the fourth highest rate in all of Iowa's 99 counties, according to Tenco.
