WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities urges community Run, Walk or Roll on Sept. 23

Dominion Post - 9/9/2018

Sept. 08--MORGANTOWN -- All-inclusive.

That's one of the main taglines for the WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities' Run, Walk or Roll races.

The event includes a 5K run, 1 mile fun walk, a track relay and a kid's 100-meter dash to be held Sept. 23 at the WVU Coliseum track. It runs from 9 a.m.-noon, and welcomes everyone to participate, including walkers, runners, people with strollers, those in wheelchairs and even folks on adapted bikes.

"Many physical activity-based events within the communities are designed in a way that people with disabilities may not be able to participate," said Lesley Cottrell, CED director. "We're hoping that people of all abilities will come out and run, walk or roll with us and have a great time."

Registration is available online and costs $30 for individuals, $15 for WVU students. Registration ends at 11:59 p.m.Sept. 23. Those who register before Monday are guaranteed a race T-shirt.

The 5K run begins at 10 a.m., starting at the track and winding through the Evansdale Campus.

The relay track event starts at 10:15 a.m. and gives team members the chance to walk or roll wheelchairs around the track for an hour.

The one-mile fun walk will include four laps around the track and starts at 10:15 a.m.

The kids' 100-meter dash is for children ages 5 and under. It begins at 10:30 a.m.

Awards will be given out in a variety of categories, including best theme group, best theme individual, most rockin' roller, top time 5K (three men and three women), top time 5K kids (ages 5-12 and 13-17), tiny tots 100-meter dash (4 and under), top fundraising individual and top fundraising group.

"The WVUCED is growing, and with help from fundraising from this event and others, we will be further expanding services for individuals with disabilities and their families in West Virginia," Cottrell said. "We're excited to begin offering a variety of programs, workshops, and services, incorporate technology that will allow us to reach individuals and their families across long distances, and develop a larger team of future providers for the state."
