Phoebe Sumter to offer 50 free 3-D mammograms in October

Americus Times Recorder - 10/17/2017

AMERICUS - In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center will offer 50 free 3-D mammograms in October to women who are uninsured and are overdue for their annual screening.

Phoebe Sumter recently implemented the new breast cancer screening technology. The procedure and experience are nearly identical to a routine mammogram, except that in mammography the machine is stationary, while in tomosynthesis it moves around the breast. During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. The 3-D view of the breast tissue helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

Tomosynthesis technology has a 40 percent higher invasive cancer detection rate than conventional 2-D mammography alone and provides up to a 40 percent reduction in false positive recalls. The new system also offers exceptional sharp images and ergonomic design for patient comfort.

"We're excited to offer this service to our community using the new 3-D mammography. This new technology gives us an additional tool to detect breast cancer early and begin treatment. The breast tomosynthesis will benefit all patients, especially those who have dense breast tissue or a personal history of breast cancer," said Patricia Fennessy, MD, board certified obstetrician/gynecologist with Phoebe Physicians

The mammograms will be provided to the first 50 eligible women who make appointments at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. To be considered for one of the free mammograms each applicant must meet the following criteria:

not had a mammogram in the last 12 months

over the age of 40,

not experiencing any breast problems, (if you are experiencing breast problems, contact your doctor immediately)

uninsured,

not pregnant,

live in one of the following counties: Sumter, Schley, Macon, Marion, Dooly, Webster, Stewart, or Taylor.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women. The American Cancer Society estimates nearly 316,000 new case of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2017. Phoebe Sumter urges women to remember breast cancer screenings are an important part of personal health.
