E'town ResCare caregiver receives regional recognition

News Enterprise - 10/15/2017

Jamar "Barkim" Gowins was recognized by the Kentucky Association of Private Providers for outstanding service to people with disabilities.

Serving as a direct support professional with ResCare's Community Alternatives-Kentucky in Elizabethtown, Gowins was named a KAPP 2017 DSP Regional Winner.

"Barkim has a way with individuals he works with and cares for that puts them at ease ? even in the most challenging situations," said Mary Thompson, executive director of Community Alternatives-Kentucky Elizabethtown. "We are so proud to have him on our team."

DSPs ? also referred to as caregivers, personal care assistants, direct care or home care aides ? provide daily support services for the many individuals with disabilities.

"Making a difference in people's lives" is the best part of the job, Gowins said. "The more you do for them, it makes you feel good inside."

Shannon McCracken, vice president of Kentucky operations for ResCare said many caregivers commit their careers to serving others.

"Barkim is an example of someone who has quietly, professionally and lovingly supported people in his care for 17 years," she said. "He is a remarkable person who advocates strongly for those without a voice and celebrates even the smallest successes as major achievements."

Founded and headquartered in Louisville, ResCare describes itself as the largest private provider of services to people with disabilities, the largest privately-owned home care company, the largest provider of specialized high-acuity neurorehabilitation in community settings and the largest career center workforce contractor in the U.S.
