Hundreds attend camp for the disabled

Irvine based-Rising Above Disabilities, the largest residential camp for adults and children with developmental disabilities in Southern California, hosted its first-ever Pep Rally and Jog-A-Thon on July 5.

Over 400 members (including 135 campers with disabilities such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism), volunteers, high school- and college-age camp counselors, nurses and kitchen angels ran, walked or jogged a collective 200 miles around the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center in Orange to raise more than $10,000 for people living with disabilities in Southern California.

UCI ex-professor signs first Founders' Pledge

James Vigil, professor emeritus of criminology, law & society at UC Irvine, signed the university's first-ever Founders' Pledge for Aztlán, a mixed reality game he is creating with business partner Sergio Muñoz.

The UCI Founders' Pledge gives students, alumni, faculty and staff an opportunity to include philanthropy in their startup ventures. Pledge signers make a commitment to give back to UCI when their company reaches marketplace success, and signers can control the amount, timing and designation of their future gift to UCI. Founders' Pledges are becoming more prevalent at universities across the nation. UC Berkeley's has attracted more than 260 entrepreneurs since its inception in 2013.

Chamber plans mixer

The Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce will host an Emerging Professionals After Hours Mixer 5:30-7:30 p.m.Aug. 8 at Twenty Eight Restaurant, 19530 Jamboree Road. The mixer is free for chamber members and $25 for visitors.
