Marshfield's Phil Johnston honored for work helping physically and mentally disabled

The Patriot Ledger - 6/23/2017

June 22--MARSHFIELD -- Former legislator and state human services secretary Philip Johnston of Marshfield, was awarded the first Massachusetts Association for Mental Health Michael and Kitty Dukakis Lifetime Achievement Award Monday.

The award was designed to honor someone who has committed themselves to causes in support of people living with disabilities, or who face mental and behavioral health challenges.

Johnston was recognized for his work in addressing behavioral-health challenges through research and treatment, and his work to end the mental health stigma.

"I'm humbled to receive this honor because we've come a long way in the fight to eliminate the stigma over mental illness, but we still have a long way to go," Johnston said.

Johnston has served in the state House of Representatives, as state Secretary of Human Services under Gov. Michael Dukakis, and as Regional Administrator for the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

"At every point in time during his career, Phil Johnston has, at all times, been a true champion for those living with mental health issues," Massachusetts Association for Mental Health President and CEO Danna Mauch said in a statement.
