Choctaw County Nursing Home Vegetable Garden

Choctaw Plaindealer - 6/15/2017

The Choctaw Plaindealer

On June 8th, the residents and staff of the Choctaw County Nursing Home made an addition to their ever-growing vegetable garden ? onions. As three residents and four staff members were on their way to plant onions, the residents had to stop and check on their tomato and bell pepper garden that was planted earlier this year.

The vegetable garden came about when residents told the staff that they would like to plant tomatoes. The staff attempted growing tomatoes inside, but the plan simply didn't work. The residents knew all along that the tomatoes would need to be planted outside, but they let the staff find out for themselves.

After the unsuccessful attempt indoors, the staff allowed the residents to plant a tomato garden outside. The second attempt was a successful harvest and the residents and staff treated themselves to tomato sandwiches and fried green tomatoes. Not long after would the residents plant a second vegetable garden consisting of red and green bell peppers.

Many of the nursing home residents grew up on farms and relied on harvesting their own produce to prepare meals. The vegetable garden gives these residents a chance to reminisce on memories from their past life. The vegetable garden is a collaboration between Activities director Nita Foust and Safe and Sound director Loretta Fields.
