A week of celebration

The Morning Sun - 5/21/2017

May 21--PITTSBURG -- All week, Pittsburg care homes have been dressing as clowns and carnival animals, wine tasting and going to car shows to celebrate National Nursing Home week.

National Nursing Home Week is a national observance which celebrates and promotes the relationships that exist between nursing home residents, family members, staff and the community -- spotlighting those who make a positive difference in the residents' life every day.

The care homes have a wide range of residents, some needing long term care, others in need of rehabilitation services, and other residents with alzheimer's and dementia.

Pittsburg Care and Rehabilitation Center Alzheimer's Unit Recreation Director James Kidd said throughout the year the residents read, do crafts and other non-daily activities to keep them going and give them something to look forward too.

NNHW is one way the homes encourage residents to join in on the activities they may have participated in, prior to their stay.

All of the festivities this week were based off this year's theme, "Spirit of America."

America in the 1950s and 60s was represented at Medicalodges through a car show provided by the Rollin' Nostalgia Car Club.

At Pittsburg Care and Rehabilitation Center they were celebrating the 50's with pink poodle skirts and "Grease" themed outfits worn by some of the staff.

On Thursday, both Medicalodges and Pittsburg Care and Rehabilitation Center celebrated America's pastime -- baseball. The staff and residents dressed to represent their favorite teams, played baseball trivia and watched the Kansas City Royals defeat the New York Yankees 5-1.
