BRIEF: Open house scheduled today

McAlester News-Capital (OK) - 7/28/2015

July 28--The McAlester branch of Oklahomans for Independent Living is welcoming the community inside its building to celebrate 25 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Executive Director Pam Pulchny said she hopes to see new and old faces today.

"It just a day to come together to meet some of our citizens that have enjoyed and received our services and learn how our services have helped them," Pulchny said.

Pulchny said the open house will run all day today, and then there will be an ice cream social starting at 5 p.m. lasting till 7 p.m. tonight.

The ADA's 25th anniversary was Sunday.

"Without the ADA, there would be a lot more discrimination," Pulchny said.

Pulchny said it is important to remember with new technologies people with disabilities are getting back out into the community more often. She said it is important to respect other's rights and treat others the way you would want to be treated.

"We just want to share with the community the success of the ADA and what it has meant to the community," Pulchny said.
