Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice to arrive April 1 in San Bernardino

Mar. 30—Rolling Start Inc., a nonprofit disability organization based in San Bernardino, will be one of the stops on the route of the Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice.

A collective of people with disabilities, and their allies, are driving throughout the United States, visiting various cities.

In California, the route is beginning April 1 in San Diego, and the vehicle is scheduled to arrive in Eureka April 6, before going on to Oregon, according to the Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice's website.

Lisa Hayes, executive director of Rolling Start, will drive the vehicle from San Diego to San Francisco, where she will hand it off to another driver, according to a news release.

The caravan is scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m.April 1 at Rolling Start's San Bernardino office, 1955 Hunts Lane, Suite 101. It will stay in San Bernardino the rest of the day and continue on to Claremont on April 2.

Other stops in California, in addition to San Francisco and Eureka, are in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Sacramento and Berkeley.

On the caravan's journey, participants will celebrate people and places significant in the struggle for access, freedom and justice and will share their stories and raise awareness of current issues, according to the news release.

"California is the birthplace of the Independent Living Movement, and it is an incredible honor to drive the caravan through our great state," Hayes said in the news release. "We will be stopping at several Centers for Independent Living, including Rolling Start, that are doing the incredible work of providing advocacy, programs and services to support the independence and inclusion of people with disabilities in their community of choice."
