UK to host free wellness workshop: Event open to residents with disabilities, caregivers

Messenger-Inquirer - 11/19/2018

Nov. 19--The University of Kentucky Human Development Institute will host a free wellness workshop for residents with disabilities and their caregivers on Dec. 10.

The workshop will promote leadership and self-advocacy through healthy choices. The two-hour event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Daviess County Extension Office, 4800A New Hartford Road.

"We want to discuss with people how living a healthy lifestyle is an important part of being a leader and a good self-advocate," said Megan Jaspersen, health and wellness coordinator for the UK Human Development Institute.

Jaspersen works on the statewide Health and Wellness Initiative. Its mission is to raise awareness of health disparities while helping residents with disabilities take charge of their health.

The December workshop is open to people of all disability levels. The event includes free food, a nutrition demonstration, light exercise and resources.

Speakers are Mike Lewis, Kentucky AgrAbility project manager, and Craig Phifer, a physical therapist and founder of the Rehabilitation and Performance Institute.

Lewis will discuss the importance of good nutrition and knowing where food is grown. Phifer will share information about exercise basics and lead a light physical activity session.

Also, Daviess County Extension agents will provide a food demonstration and help participants make their own healthy snack.

The registration deadline is Dec. 5. Participants can register by calling Jaspersen at 859-257-2304 or by emailing her at megan.jaspersen@uky.edu.
