---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a “smart” all-terrain wheelchair for individuals with mobility disabilities and/or wheelchair users. This prototype combines the features of a powered wheelchair, dune buggy, and an ATV to create a new GPS-enabled wheelchair with fat tires and four-wheel drive that allows individuals with lower extremity and mobility disabilities or spinal cord injury to navigate almost any terrain. Developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing (IITB) in conjunction with Otto Bock HealthCare (GmbH), the Superfourin chair is a modified ATV with a hybrid engine, on-board computer, and embedded sensors to monitor both the user's vital signs and vehicle status. This prototype was test driven by an individual with multiple sclerosis, who was able to enjoy an outing alone in the Thüringer Forest in Germany with his family for the first time in years. TITLE: Superfourin wheelchair opens up a new world to the disabled. WEBSITE: Engadget. REF: http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/20/superfourin-wheelchair-opens-up-a-new....
