---- CUSTOMIZED ADAPTATION --------- PURPOSE: To provide a custom adapted power source for a motorized scooter for an individual with mobility and various disabilities. The individual lives in Florida and the uses the scooter for mobility outside of the home. An adapted battery and canopy that uses solar energy provides a piece of mind during electrical outages due to hurricanes and other disasters. To create this adaptation, William Heckenstaller of Gulf City Solar, in Bonita was contacted. Instead of installing glass panels, Heckenstaller used a panel of plastic strips that absorb the sun’s energy. The panel snaps off and folds for transport in a van. The approximate cost was $2,500 and it took several months to convert the scooter into a solar-powered unit due to rewiring. The solar battery is approximately 14 by 14 inches in size and is located under the scooter seat. This provides a free, environmentally friendly alternative to powering a scooter chair.
